A poll on the political mood in the United States conducted by the Democratic Party has alarmed the party at its own loss of popularity.
Conducted by the party-affiliated Democracy Corps, the poll indicated 43 percent of voters favored the Republican Party, while 38 percent had positive feelings about Democrats.
"Republicans weakened in this poll ... but it shows Democrats weakening more," said Stanley Greenberg, who served as President Clinton's pollster.
Greenberg told the Christian Science Monitor he attributes the slippage to voters' perceptions that Democrats have "no core set of convictions or point of view."
Fellow strategist James Carville said the war in Iraq and rising fuel prices are affecting party loyalty as well.
"The country is just in a foul mood," Carville said. He noted within the same poll, 56 percent of Americans say the country is headed in the wrong direction.
The poll was conducted June 20-26 and queried 1,078 likely voters. The margin of error was pegged at 3 points.

Most neo-Democrats today wouldn't know it from reading my stuff, but I come from a long line of true Democrats, dating back to the time of the founding of the party. That's on my mother's side. Most of what I write is merely a reflection of my upbringing in what were once firm Democratic principles. The direction the party has taken since the onset of the Roosevelt era is the reason I switched to the other side. Carville is right in saying that Americans are somewhat disturbed by the way the country is heading. His reasons for it are wrong. The cause goes far beyond the war in Iraq and high fuel prices. And he and others had better begin to understand that the problems within the party don't begin and end with the Third George. I can remember when the people in the north-central states blamed Eisenhower for a severe drought. The analogy is appropriate.
The Windjammer
Today's Democrats, at least the most visible and noxious of them, are consummed with hatred of George Bush. They are obsessive/compulsive. They have lost all objectivity. They have lost the ability to rationally discuss issues, and are having a significant enough influence over the direction of the Party to negatively affect it and its ability to function.
No one is more pleased with this development than Republicans, who stand to benefit even further from the Democrats' implosion.
